We surveyed seven major Colorado prep reporters and consulted with two college scouts to come up with our rankings for offensive skill positions.
Scout’s Picks:
QB: Austyn Modrzewski
Austyn is your prototypical QB prospect. He is the ideal QB height (6’2-6’6) at 6’4 and checks off all of our boxes. In our opinion he is a D1 prospect right up with anyone from any other state. By far the most impressive thing is his completion percentage. There are many things you can develop as a QB at the collegiate level but the two that seem to be the greatest indicator of success are accuracy and velocity. For a while we were searching for the best pure athletes that could also throw but the direction has changed back toward making plays with your arm. Great reaction time and drops in the pocket. Good movement. Throws and leads receivers well over the middle and a great deep ball. Keeps eyes up and takes what is available. Throwing motion can be long at times and occasional tendency to drop shoulder are areas improvement but have not impacted his ability to get the ball off quickly when needed.
RB: Jonathan Coar
The first thing that jumps out is his incredible field vision. At 5’10 he has all the traits to be a great zone running back. Patience to wait for the hole to open up combined with deceptive speed are all things that can make him so dangerous. Impressive ability to navigate in tight traffic. Catch the ball well out of the backfield. Extremely explosive first steps after cutting. Would love to see faster breakaway speed but it is offset by impressive acceleration. Runs stronger than his current size would indicate. Bottom line is he has the rare talent for finding and fitting into small cervices and breaking through into the second level.
WR: Marcus Mozier
Marcus is a big receiver at 6’3 200 lbs with deceptive speed. He is another that certainly deserves the d1 looks he is getting. Has very fast breakaway speed and is difficult if not impossible to jam at the line. Gets up to full speed very quickly and always comes down with balls thrown in his direction. He is a matchup problem in that he has wide receiver speed in the body of a tight end. Likely would require a combination of linebacker and corner or corner and safety to cover. If I landed him at my school I would likely try to switch him to tight end just based size and speed. Has the ability to carry tacklers down the field. Good at finding space in zones. Would like to see some additional release abilities that he likely hasn’t had to use because of speed and physical dominance.
