We surveyed seven major Colorado prep reporters and consulted with two college scouts to come up with our rankings for offensive skill positions.
Scout’s Picks:
QB: Brady Vodicka
Brady might be our favorite all-around quarterback prospect across all classes right now. He is listed at 6’1 going into his junior year which is right on the bottom end that we look at as far as top quarterback prospects but remember he still only a sophomore at the moment so there is certainly room to grow there. One thing we love about him is that even his long balls are crisp with great velocity. Many high school quarterbacks throw long lofty balls and they get touchdowns at this level but in college those type of balls require you to throw the ball further and further as guys get faster. Speaking of velocity, he clocked in with our highest velocity throw we measured on film at 54 mph and he has the second highest spin rate of any QB we measured. At 215 lbs he is already the right size for a college starter and we go back to accuracy as a determining factor of success which he has.
RB: Landon Kalsbeck
Landon reminds us of another Colorado prospect named Christian McCaffrey. He is a tall RB at 6’2 but has the frame to match. His 40 yard dash is on the lower end for d1 prospects but his power and athleticism make up for the small difference in speed. He does not lack in first step acceleration and has outstanding field awareness. Very difficult to tackle. What stands out about him as a prospect is his all around athleticism. This makes him exceptionally scary given than he is only in his sophomore season. He has two years left to develop. Great field awareness and understanding of the game. Could absolutely be a dominant force in college in a couple of years.
WR: Split Decision Max Lovett /Joey Foot and Slot: Ja’Pree Jennings
This is where things get interesting from the scouts point of view. Max and Joey are fairly similar in many ways and so we will group them together, with the scouts being split on them. Decent heights and both have excellent hands. Great blockers on the outside when needed. Great instincts on getting open and catching the ball. Both are very good at influencing defensive backs to break free and optimize positioning on the field. Great route runners and able to break free even when initially contained. Very good hands on contested catches.
Ja’Pree is on the small size at 5’6 but you can see all the power and explosiveness he has. Maybe the best releases of any WR we watched. Ability to break down and change direction on a whim. Top notch breakaway speed. Makes people miss in space and is never tackled by the first person in the open field. He has a unique jump cut that really makes him stand out when you’re looking at guys that are agile. Lacks the height to play outside but does not drop the difficult blind catches in the flat and over the middle.
